Yesterday we posted photos of our Cala Table on our company page @brianboggschairmakers. We knew that we wanted something truly striking in our booth for next week’s @westedgedesign that would also reference where we will be showing this piece - right next to the Pacific Ocean. The blue curly maple required the work of our finisher, and we couldn’t be happier with the result. While we often prefer to let the natural beauty of the wood shine through, we think that the blue enhances the striking movement in the curly maple. What do you think?

When I first started this journey in chairmaking in 1982, I never thought that I would be receiving pictures and stories from people who are inspired by my designs via something called "the internet" four decades later. That being said, I'm thankful every single time I do.
Knowing that @oilwaterandwood built this shaving horse to be used by him and his family has filled me with gratitude for not only getting to do what I do but for helping generations to come to know the joys of furniture making. It's not easy to make a living, but now and again, the universe smiles in reassurance. Seeing Kat stretching to reach the foot bar on a shaving horse interpreted from my design makes one such moment.

We’re in the middle of a coffee table build for a resort in Japan. Once we saw the bent base out of the vacuum bag, it was obvious that there were other potential products that could stem from this design! The first Idea was Jack’s...”They could just pull it behind the container ship like a ski!”. John is contemplating lounge seating, and I had a spiritual moment trying it out as a meditation chair. As you will see, we did eventually get the piece under the table where it was intended. We hope to revisit this design soon!

In our previous post, we showed you one of our gorgeous 20’ slabs rolling into our shop. We are now making a beautiful 14’ x 4’ table with two of those. While I felt a little bit like a criminal when we sawed these rare 20’ slabs to mere 14’ sticks, the table we are making deserves the best material we can find. We rarely build tables that do not come through our own imagination, but when @david.michael.miller called about this table idea for a client’s Park City home, I could not say no. This table represents a true collaboration that has us feeling grateful for where we live and who we get to work with. Horizon Lumber (PA) provided the slabs, @forestmillworkinc planed and edge joined the slabs, and Double K design wrought the steel base that now awaits beautification at Asheville Paint and Powdercoat (photos later). John Aldridge, our trusted table guy (employee) splined and glued up the top. Oh, and our friends in Maine at @lienielsentoolworks made the hand plane. I provided the perspiration over a few wood shavings and am enjoying working with friends. I love this job!

Right after I decided *not* to show this hack, I r

Right after I decided *not* to show this hack, I realized I needed to make a revision to a fixture I had just built. My regular fence would not work because of the shape of the part. This fence allowed me to make the cuts super quickly. Again, it is limited, and I usually use other methods, but this is a good one to have by the saw, and the price is right.
Bandsaw Hack #2: Quick Fence - Years ago, I needed an epoxy stirring stick real quick. There were some wood scraps on the floor by the band saw that looked about right but too wide. I grabbed two and used one for a fence to help cut a straight line. It worked quite well, so I used that technique when I needed a straighter cut than I can do freehand.
I have a good and magnetic fence, but both take a few seconds to set up. I also have this quick fence that just gets set and held in place, and I’m good to go. Its uses are very limited, but it’s really cheap and really quick for some little things where time is more important than precision. I had been using just whatever was by the saw as a fence, but I added this rubber grip side to a plywood scrap, which works really well.

When Brian first started, and for many years after

When Brian first started, and for many years after, he not only hand-wove every seat and back himself, but he also went deep into the woods to harvest the Hickory Bark. He harvested over 25 linear miles of bark within his first 15 years. While these chairs are now retired from our hands, we love spotting them out in the wild and seeing other craftsmen continuing the Boggs legacy.
