Right after I decided *not* to show this hack, I realized I needed to make a revision to a fixture I had just built. My regular fence would not work because of the shape of the part. This fence allowed me to make the cuts super quickly. Again, it is limited, and I usually use other methods, but this is a good one to have by the saw, and the price is right.
Bandsaw Hack #2: Quick Fence - Years ago, I needed an epoxy stirring stick real quick. There were some wood scraps on the floor by the band saw that looked about right but too wide. I grabbed two and used one for a fence to help cut a straight line. It worked quite well, so I used that technique when I needed a straighter cut than I can do freehand.
I have a good and magnetic fence, but both take a few seconds to set up. I also have this quick fence that just gets set and held in place, and I’m good to go. Its uses are very limited, but it’s really cheap and really quick for some little things where time is more important than precision. I had been using just whatever was by the saw as a fence, but I added this rubber grip side to a plywood scrap, which works really well.

When Brian first started, and for many years after, he not only hand-wove every seat and back himself, but he also went deep into the woods to harvest the Hickory Bark. He harvested over 25 linear miles of bark within his first 15 years. While these chairs are now retired from our hands, we love spotting them out in the wild and seeing other craftsmen continuing the Boggs legacy. It was the last Friday night in August after all the craftsmen had started their weekend. Oliver, Megan, Melanie, and I stayed late - ready to capture a video production showing off our new desk, “The Oconee Executive Workstation.” I wasn’t doing real work on this desk, but the owner certainly will for years to come. We got a lot of comments on our last video about why we don’t use a miter saw or a skill saw when working with rough material like this. The answer is speed! We are not going for precision on these rough cuts, we will use our miter saw or table saw when we need to nail an end cut. In this video, I was able to rough cut three separate 2x4s in a minute and a half, most of that time was setting up the fence. I am using a new carbide 3-tooth blade for these cuts. A standard carbon blade with a 3-hook tooth pattern will work well too. The carbide just leaves a smoother cut and lasts about 10 times as long.
Operating efficiently is essential for any workshop. A few minutes here and there add a lot of productivity to a month or allow more time to refine details.
Even more important than time is that the bandsaw is much safer on rough stock than a table saw or chop saw. The bandsaw never kicks back on rips or binds on crosscuts. I’ll demonstrate how we use the chop saw on rough stock to avoid those problems on that machine. We do that when the band saw is occupied by another craftsman or set up for another process I want to leave as is. Our chop saw is closer to our lumber racks so is better positioned for crosscutting in the first stage. So we don’t always use the bandsaw for this process. In fact, I don’t advocate that the bandsaw is the only tool for anything. I like to be able to use all our tools with versatility and skill. I just have more love for my Y-30 than for any of my other machines. Fortunately, those other machines don’t get jealous!

We’re starting a new mini-series on this page called “Bandsaw Hacks” Just some quick and effective tips for anyone who uses a bandsaw. In this video, I am demonstrating how I often rough cut stock to length before beginning the joining and planing steps. This generates a cut that is fairly square in one orientation. This is just the preliminary stock breakdown. I have found this to be faster than our chop saw, chain saw, or skill saw….by a lot. I have rough dimensions written on the blue tape you can barely see under the sawdust. Once I get the stock to a manageable length, I use those marks for these cuts. On more precious material where I need to be more specific as to where I place the cuts, I’ll lay them out along the board. For finish cuts I will use our chop saw or table saw and slow down a bit for the precision I need. Replacing the blade on the workshop’s workhorse! As mentioned in the video, this saw is a 1941 Yates American frame, however over the past 20 years of owning it, it has received some upgraded bits and pieces. Like the wheels from @premier_bandwheel
